Winter’s Last Hurrah

Snowflakes falling in slow motion
Greeted me this morning.
A sudden storm blew in at night,
Silent, without warning.

I hope the baby daffodils
Who dared to raise their heads
Can survive the frigid morning air
As they grace my flower beds.

Old Man Winter’s dying breath
Was not much of a threat.
The snow was gone within the hour;
The grass is now just wet.

By noon the sun was shining
On the dark-green shrouded flowers,
But the early evening sunset
Brought with it scattered showers.

This game will play out many times
Before the Spring arrives.
Only the most hardy flowers
Will be able to survive.

But what a fabulous display
When they are all in bloom.
As their fragrance permeates the air
To dispel the Winter gloom.

So to you, my yellow maidens,
I pray that you'll be strong,
For Springtime is not far away.
We’ll see your face 'fore long!
