He Shoots! He Scores!
Streaking down the glass-smooth ice,
Zigging left and spinning right,
The center splits the defense;
The target in his sights.
Then two-on-one the offense
Flies across the center ice,
Passing the puck between them,
Only once or twice.
As he races toward the goalie,
Skating in the slot,
The crowd roars its exhortation,
As the center takes his shot.
With thick-gloved hands and shielded face,
The goalie guards the gate.
The frozen bullet speeds his way,
But he deflects it with his skate.
The right wing takes the rebound,
Circling behind the net
The goalie fears a wrap-around
And closes off the left.
Flicking the puck to the left wing,
Who shoots it straight and low,
It bounces off the goalie’s pad
And in the net it goes!
The red light flashes, the siren wails
The ref points toward the net.
But don’t get over confident,
The game’s not over yet!
The scenario will play out several times
Before official time is up.
Oh, there’s nothing so exciting
As hockey’s Stanley Cup!
